Opinion

Books are breeding bias

PUBLISHED ON THE CATALYST ONLINE

As the school board representative for Millard West I often listen to public comments that go against diversity in schools, especially when it comes to literature that differs from the classics. Since I am not allowed to respond to public comment, I decided to write a story about why I think students should have more access to books written by diverse authors with diverse characters in schools. It took several weeks for me to put this story together because I wanted to make sure that I told it with the depth that it commanded. I included a variety of sources to back up my claims as well as added strong examples of literature that would diversify classrooms.

The rapid pass needs a rapid update

PUBLISHED ON THE CATALYST ONLINE

When I turned 16 I became a frequent blood donor and I knew that I was passionate about the need for blood donations, but when I originally set out to write an opinion story on blood donations I did not have a clear angle. At the time I was writing this story my school's blood drive was going on and I had signed up to donate. After completing the RapidPass I realized that there was hidden homophobia in the blood donation process. I scrapped the story I had originally written over the importance of giving blood and instead wrote about why restricting gay men from donating blood should come to an end.
